Lions celebrate annual picnic in Calhan
by Toni Gibbons The Calhan Lions Club hosted their annual picnic at the Calhan United Methodist Church on June 3. Reverend Linda Patzke gave the opening prayer with the meeting being led by President Jim Nile. It was decided by the club members to fund the Kidsight program for another year. Carl Finney noted that Mountain View Electric had doubled the original grant request for Kids Spree from $5,000 to $10,000. Debbie Pieper reported that they also had received a verbal agreement from WalMart for monetary assistance with Kids Spree. The tentative date for Kids Spree has been set for Saturday, August 9. Volunteers are welcome and needed. After a rather heated debate it was decided that the club would provide pies for the Senior Day at the El Paso County Fair on Friday, July 25. Among the debate issues were concerns as to whether volunteer servers and piemakers would have to pay to get into the fair. “What is the fair willing to give back to us for this service,” asked one member. Jim Nile said the exact details of the event and what was required would be forthcoming at the next meeting. Club members will be working the gates for the El Paso County Speedway on Saturdays, June 14 and June 21. Additional volunteers are needed to help park cars and man the gates. The next meeting for the Lions Club will be at 6:30pm on Tuesday, July 1. It is planned that the El Paso County Fair Queen will be attendance and the new officers will be installed.
