Calhan considers sale of property to The State Bank

by Tim Gibbons

A proposal by The State Bank to purchase the lot north of the Calhan Post Office and next to Highway 24 was reviewed by the Calhan Board of Trustees during their regular board meeting on July 14.

The plot is privately owned, however, in order for the proposed building to fit on the plot, it would require the purchase of the Sixth Street corridor between Cascade Street and Monument Street. This property would need to be vacated by the town and then sold to the bank.

The plot north of the Calhan Post Office could soon be the site of a new location for The State Bank. The Town of Calhan owns a small strip of the land seen here as part of the Sixth Street Corridor. Plans were discussed to vacate this strip of land and sell it to The State Bank.
The State Bank is hoping to build a 900 square feet bank building that would include a lobby and drive-up services.

The proposed entrance for the facility would be on Cascade Street and The State Bank has said that they will pay for the water study to determine proper drainage of the land should the town sell it to them.

General consensus of the Calhan Board of Trustees was to pursue the sale of the property, however, further information would be needed, including a site plan, before a final decision could be made.

The board also voted to increase the base water rate by five dollars effective September 1, 2008. The new rates will be as follows:

Base water residential rate up to 4,000 gallons is $28.83.

  • 4,001 to 20,000 gallons $1.95/thousand
  • 20,001 to 40,000 gallons $2.72/thousand
  • over 40,000 gallons $3.25/thousand

Base water commercial up to 2,000 gallons is $32.08.

  • over 2,000 gallons $2.17/thousand

Sewer rates will not be adjusted other than the normal 2.2 percent increase implemented this July.

Other business included discussion of the trash rate increases and what could be done to offset the increase.

The final results of the Railway Survey should be presented to the board by their July 29 workshop and will be presented by the board on their next board meeting.
